Aaaack! Lord, no. Bill's response to my message was a very good idea, but it wasn't really compatible with the idea in my original message. Bill is talking about decentralizing the marketing of cultural commodities, and having that marketing respond to regional marketplaces and be closely tied to regional cultural life -- this especially would be an innovation, since the marketplace is so large now that it cannot be tied to *any* particular cultural life. I was talking about being rid altogether of the idea of marketing of cultural commodities, and building up localized cultural life that ignored the marketing of commodities and, to a large extent, avoided their production.
