Bill Hoekstra, the transit director in Cedar Rapids, said the city's bus fleet is now running on the old pioneer meal blend of corn and beans. The Cedar Rapids bus department and the Linn County LIFTS bus system for the elderly and handicapped have launched the six month experiment to test a fuel blended from corn-derived methanol and soybean-based biodiesel. The project is being funded by the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board and the National Soy-Diesel Development Board to show the methanol-biodiesel blend can reduce harmful vehicle emissions. A successful demonstration could help Iowa farmers through increased demand for both corn and soybeans. prev message next message
