Preface to the WWW Edition

The Autodidact's Journal is currently defunct. Only one issue was produced; the publication and submission information contained in the first editorial is obsolete but has been retained there for its historical interest.

We didn't publish a second issue because although everyone that saw a copy said it was the most amazing thing they'd ever seen, we recieved no submissions of material. Our aim was to create a virtual community of people self-identifying as "researchers", scattered across the country, held together by the magazine. In other words we didn't want subscribers so much as we wanted guild members. The whole thing was intended to carry on where the Huckleberry Ashram (details in the Journal) had left off. Consequently the lack of response convinced us that while we may have a great magazine, our real aim wasn't being addressed.

The collected material for issue #2 is still on hand, and if you'd like to submit something, please do -- it can't hurt. We may just start the thing up again. Or we may begin to self-publish the Straw Dogs Autobiographical Comix. Or we may buy a fleet of VW buses and drive them all to Mexico City. Or ...

In case you've browsed all the Web pages and are wondering, the historical trajectory goes like this:

Huckleberry Ashram --> Autodidact's Journal --> Straw Dogs Group

More as it happens.

Preface to the First Edition

The Autodidact's Journal is a research journal devoted to the one group who has none: namely, researchers with no (conventional) field of specialization or institutional loyalties. It is intended to be a journal of record for people who are curious and are doing something about it, or would like to.

The Autodidact's Journal is published on the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes. Your submissions are encouraged in any legible format; computer media preferred -- by email to the editor or, if you must use conventional mail, Macintosh disk ideal.

No rights are reserved on any part of The Autodidact's Journal. You may reproduce and distribute it in whole or in part freely. In fact, that is its distribution mechanism. Please photocopy and distribute the journal in its entirety among the most extraordinary people you know. If you reproduce only part of the journal, please credit the author of the selection and include the address of the journal in order to invite and facilitate further correspondence.
